Take Back Canada with Mel Hurtig event in Vancouver
The Take Back Canada event began with ‘The Canadian Sellouts aka Hall 23 giving a rousing performance of inspirational songs and ended their set with the song “Blame Canada”
Ruth Meta veteran Vancouver activist and event organizer introduced the man of the evening MEL HURTIG, PUBLISHER, and ORDER OF CANADA RECIPIENT!
Everyone gathered in close to listen to Mel and his mesmerizing speech of social justice, income redistribution and making sure our politicians are accountable on all level of government!
A well attended crowd in Vancouver was motivated and inspired by Mel’s words.

Dr. Maggie O’Neill, researcher from Durham University, will discuss her work in participatory action research and participatory arts, specifically, “Community, Politics and Resistance in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside: a participatory project”.
This project is a social research collaboration between Atira – Enterprising Women Making Art, Providing Alternatives Counseling & Education (PACE) Society, Megaphone, and United We Can and supported by the Community Arts Council of Vancouver and AHA MEDIA
The project explores ways of seeing the spaces and places of community through the eyes of DTES residents.

We continue to capture the pressures facing Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside as the city prepares to host the Winter Olympics next February, and how a remarkable group of individuals is using cutting edge social media technologies to empower their community.
WGH-is a story about a revolution, one of social change and a paradigm shift in media representation. Vancouver sets the stage, against the backdrop of the 2010 Winter Games, for our documentary about a marginalized community embracing social media tools to empower, inspire and breakdown the digital divide.
This is a project that Andrew Lavigne is directing and is being produced by animalmotherfilms.com. Shot on various capture devices including the Red, the HVX 200, the 5D MkII and the Nokia N77 cellphone. We began shooting Feb/2009 and will continue through March/2010.
Director Andrew Lavigne and Producer Jon Ornoy are now 9 months into production, charting the inspiring story of the creation of the W2 Media Arts Center as part of the Woodward’s redevelopment and the vital steps towards breaking down the digital divide that will take place within its walls.

The Powell Street district around Oppenheimer Park is drenched in the history of the labour movement and the Japanese-Canadian community. Geoff Meggs, Vancouver City Councillor, brings a journalist’s view and curiosity to the walk, while Lorene Oikawa, Vice President of BCGEU, shares her enthusiasm for the stories of the labour movement and Japanese-Canadian history. This walk explores the diminishing reminders of this historic district and the people that brought these streets to life. $10 for non-residents, pay what you can for local residents

Meet at steps of Carnegie Community Centre, 401 Main
This tour with researcher Wendy Pedersen and volunteers of the Carnegie Community Action Project (CCAP) will start at the front steps of the Carnegie Centre and visit some of the best loved places in the area according to the stories of low-income DTES residents.
Contemplate how these key sites give us clues as to how to build a vision for a safe, healthy and affordable low-income neighbourhood and how this future is threatened by gentrification.
