The Hope in Shadows community vote began this week in the Downtown Eastside where we set up a tent and mobile display daily. The local vote, which runs until Friday, determines the winners of the contest, to be announced in October when the calendar is unveiled.

It’s great to see how much the local people passing by on the street enjoy checking out the top 40 photographs. Over the last few rainy days, as people have crowded our little tent on the sidewalk, I realize how much the simple display (8″ x 12″ enlargements stuck to cardboard panels) has added to the Hope in Shadows project. The Downtown Eastside is a very creative part of Vancouver, full of artists and galleries. However, I’m proud of helping to make these photographs so available to everyone – you couldn’t get a more public place in the Downtown Eastside than the sidewalk on the corner of Main and Hastings!

Voting in other areas of the city such as Commercial Drive, Robson Street and the Folk Festival will also help us choose the calendar images. If you’d like to see the mobile display please come and visit us at the following places:

Grandview Park, Commercial Drive: Sunday July 12, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Pivot Potluck at Trout Lake: Sunday July 12, 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.

Outside the Vancouver Art Gallery on Robson St: Thursday July 16, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Vancouver Folk Festival, July 17-19: all day during the festival!

Kind regards,

P.S. Thanks to everyone who kindly completed the Hope in Shadows survey. The online survey is still open, so if you have a few minutes, please let us know what you think.

Time: 15:00 – 21:00
Location: Trout Lake Park – south-east corner

Description

It’s sunny, it’s warm, and it’s time for Pivot’s Summer Potluck in Wonderland! Come out and join Pivot staff, board, interns, and volunteers for a relaxed potluck at Trout Lake Park on Sunday July 12th. Mingle with other Pivot supporters, talk social change, play a game of croquet, or just lounge in shade and enjoy the scenery.

We will be sharing the south-eastern side of park with the 15th annual Alice in Wonderland Festival and Mad Tea Party and the organizers are excited about Pivot supporters being part of the festivities.

So bring your rabbit ears and/or top hats and get ready for quite a show – the festival runs from 1 – 5 and the finale includes a performance by the legendary Carnival Band.

To see the festival in action – check out this video from last year: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWXy65GNX5s

Plus! See the new top 40 Hope in Shadows photos and vote for your favourite three!

What: Pivot Summer Potluck in Wonderland
When: Sunday, July 12th 3 – 8
Where: Trout Lake off 19th Avenue (south-east end of the park)
Who: Pivot supporters like you!

What you should bring:

Food: bring your favorite dish to share with everyone – and just so that we don’t end up with 200 different potato salads, send Naila a quick email at getinvolved [at] pivotlegal [dot] com and let us know what you are bringing. We are attempting to make the potluck a paper-plate free event, so please bring something to eat on (ceramic plate, tupperware, etc.) and utensils.

Musical instruments: if you have a musical instrument and feel like playing on a Sunday in the park, please bring it along.

Games: we have the basics – soccer, frisbee, croquet – covered but if you have a game that you really want to share, bring it out.

Costumes: If you want to engage with the festival the possibilities are endless (see the video). Some easy items include: rabbit ears, top hats, face-paint, Alice dresses.

Looking forward to seeing you in the park!

Dear April,

I am writing to congratulate you on your successful nomination to the Pivot Foundation Board of Directors!

We are all very excited to work with you, thank you very much for putting your name forward.  We received a phenomenal list of nominees, and it was extremely hard to narrow it down. But what a final board! Each of the new directors is a leader in their field and their community, with tons of organizing experience and wide-ranging personal networks, and we are EXTREMELY curious and excited to see what will happen when you join forces with the goal of promoting social justice.

 Our First Get-Together: Sunday, July 12, 2009

Our first get-together is going to more fun than work.  You are warmly invited to Pivot Potluck in Wonderland, this coming Sunday, July 12, 2009. This will be a great chance to meet the other new directors, Pivot staff, interns and volunteers, and some of the thousands of Pivot supporters and donors.  This is also where we will be formally announcing the new board of Pivot Foundation directors, so it would be great to have you there to take a bow!
