In this video, I film the crime scene at Union Street and Jackson Avenue where a man was shot in a stolen truck by police.

[news1130] Vancouver Police shot a man in a stolen truck this evening near Union Street and Jackson Avenue. He was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

I arrived on scene in  response to a tweet by the twitter account of 24 Hours Vancouver where it originally gave the location of Union and Jackson by the Viaduct of the shooting.

I also made this video in response to Video Blogging Week 2009 April 5-12 as my first video for the week.

This filming happened on Sunday April 5th, 2009 in Vancouver’s Strathcona area

A tale of two Homeless Cities – Vancouver and Washington D.C. using cellphones, blogs and emails to get connected

April 6, 2009 Leave a comment

On Sunday April 4th,  thousands of Vancouver folks marched in solidarity to support the Grand March for Housing. which  demand immediate government action to end homelessness, build social housing, protect rental housing and raise welfare and minimum rage rates.

To empower and build the Vancouver Downtown Eastside community capacity and connectivity, the Fearless City Mobile Project was developed:

The Fearless Mobile City project is a two-way social media system for marginalized residents and artists of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES). It is an interactive communication system that uses Mobile Muse 3’s technology platform, a free wireless mesh network, distribution and training with mobile handsets, and live screens in public spaces. Participate in Fearless City at live events in and around our inner-city neighbourhood to create community generated media while confronting the digital divide.

AHA MEDIA is proud to still participate in Fearless City Project ! http://www.netsquared.org/projects/fearless-city-mobile

From engaging with the public through Fearless projects, we developed our own unique way of doing event coverage and citizen journalism as we build our own AHA MEDIA website.

We at AHA MEDIA are glad for the opportunities from Fearless City that help pique our interest into mobile phone technology and all the ways it has helped our Downtown Eastside Community.

In another city – Washington D.C. an article in the Washington Post describes how their homeless use cellphones, blogs and email to stay on top.

On D.C. Streets, the Cellphone as Lifeline

Homeless People Turn to Technology to Track Assistance and Opportunities

It’s another sign of a society in transition by way of technology, as businesses shed physical addresses for cyberspace and homeless people can establish an online presence and chase opportunities digitally.
“Having a phone isn’t even a privilege anymore — it’s a necessity,” said Rommel McBride, 50, who spent about six years on the streets before recently being placed in a city housing program. He has had a mobile phone for a year. “A cellphone is the only way you can call to keep up with your food stamps, your housing application, your job. When you’re living in a shelter or sleeping on the streets, it’s your last line of communication with the world.”

Advocates who work with the District’s homeless estimate that 30 percent to 45 percent of the people they help have cellphones. A smaller number have e-mail accounts, and some blog to chronicle their lives on the streets.

When Laura Zeilinger, deputy director of program operations for the D.C. Department of Human Services, conducted housing assessments of a couple of thousand people living on city streets last summer, she was surprised by how many gave her cellphone numbers and e-mail addresses.

“Phones are really a lifeline for many people,” said Adam Rocap, director of social services at Miriam’s Kitchen, a nonprofit drop-in center for the homeless. During a string of attacks against homeless people sleeping downtown in the fall, two victims called 911 for help after they were assaulted, he said.

He is a drummer and has been playing for 43 years!  He has played with the band Rapid Fire in the 1980’s and waxes nostagically about his youth in the local Strip bars – the Marr and the Drake Hotel.  He laughs on how two strippers took him to Hawaii for fun in the sun! 🙂
He recalls that 3 years ago that he couldn’t even draw stick men and now he enjoys creating art for the enjoyments of his friends!  He quips that if “We only use 11% of our brains, then we have 89% left to discover ourselves 🙂

He’s been drawing for 3 years now and even his mother wonders where he got his talent from!

He proudly says that when he gives away his artwork to friends, they display it in their living rooms 🙂

Now at the young age of 50 years  he says “It’s not the way you look past a first impression, it’s not having one that makes for a special person with a giving heart!”

Vodpod videos no longer available.

In this video, Cyrous Sharifpour, Owner of Waves Coffee on Main and Cordova ( across the Vancouver Police Station ) speaks about his Coffee and how his shop wants to help our Downtown Eastside neighborhood! 🙂

For more information on our DTES area, please read the wikipedia link

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downtown_Eastside

Cyrous is a warm hearted and gregarious man who makes sure that everyone in his coffee shop is having a wonderful time!

In this day and age, it’s quite rare to see the owner step out from behind his desk to come out and engage with his customers! 🙂  What a welcoming feeling that is to feel valued as customers!  People wish to connect to something local in our area and Waves Coffee at Main and Cordova is it! 🙂

Waves Coffee sponsors local non profit groups from here in our DTES neighborhood to bigger venues such as our recent “Women in Film Festival” at the VanCity Theatre where our mentor Mo Simpson was honored with an award from Kodak to a  Large well attended multicultural event at the Plaza of Nations where over 5,000 cups of coffee were poured to support the arts and shows!

It”s such a great feeling knowing that there are still people like Cyrous and places like Waves Coffee that help the local scene 🙂

As AHAMEDIA are emerging new media and social media citizen journalists, we are glad to know that there are places in our neighborhood that have Free Wireless from 6AM – 12 midnight everyday!  We are a very mobile and multimedia production team, and we are glad that a warm place with great customer service and coffee is open for people like us!
