April Smith of AHA MEDIA is proud to be part of Pivot Foundation Board of Directors!
Below is a letter written by John Richardson, Executive Director of Pivot Legal Society
Dear April,
I am writing to congratulate you on your successful nomination to the Pivot Foundation Board of Directors!
We are all very excited to work with you, thank you very much for putting your name forward. We received a phenomenal list of nominees, and it was extremely hard to narrow it down. But what a final board! Each of the new directors is a leader in their field and their community, with tons of organizing experience and wide-ranging personal networks, and we are EXTREMELY curious and excited to see what will happen when you join forces with the goal of promoting social justice.
Our First Get-Together: Sunday, July 12, 2009
Our first get-together is going to more fun than work. You are warmly invited to Pivot Potluck in Wonderland, this coming Sunday, July 12, 2009. This will be a great chance to meet the other new directors, Pivot staff, interns and volunteers, and some of the thousands of Pivot supporters and donors. This is also where we will be formally announcing the new board of Pivot Foundation directors, so it would be great to have you there to take a bow!
I look forward to seeing you soon! In the meantime, I would like to invite you to join our Facebook Group, and start following us on twitter: @pivot_housing | @hopeinshadows | @kiwipaul @pwrinch

AHA MEDIA attended The Miss Guide’s “Walking the Ruins: Fragments of Vancouver
April Smith and Peter Davies of AHA MEDIA on behalf of W2 Community Media Arts http://www.creativetechnology.org attended the “Walking the Ruins: Fragments of Vancouver with commentary by The Miss Guides made up of a art collective of Natalie Doonan, Katharine Somody and Sean George .

AHA MEDIA found the walk a delightful blend of a historical tour and a theatrical performance. It was like taking part of a National Film Board of Canada documentary but in real time and experience 🙂

A unique blend of historical tour and street theatre, this one hour walk will make you experience Vancouver as though for the first time. Using the city as their stage, The Miss Guides will lead you through the gritty underbelly of a city teeming with secrets.

From glamour to grime, Walking the Ruins explores four surprising urban sites, drawing unexpected connections between the forgotten past and overlooked present.

Audiences are limited to 12 adults, and groups meet on the Northwest corner of Granville and Hastings Streets, in front of Sinclair Centre, rain or shine ( bring an umbrella )

Walking the Ruins runs July 9 – August 1: Thursdays + Fridays at 7pm; Saturdays at 2pm.

Tickets $20 ( includes entry to Harbour Center’s The Lookout, valued at $13) available through: http://www.themissguides.com

or http://www.tickettonight.ca or 604.684.2787

Roy speaks about horrible living conditions in Vancouver Downtown Eastside (DTES) SRO Hotel
In this video, Roy ( who declined to be filmed ) speaks about the horrible living conditions which include bed bugs, rats and cockroaches that he and his partner face.
What is even more surprising is how his rent jumped $65 dollars extra and how he lives on just $100 a month for support!!
Roy’s personal story is just one of the indications that gentrification and homelessness are becoming more apparent in the Vancouver Downtown Eastside
