Ruth Meta says:

Meena Wong … NDP Vancouver South and I are arranging this little meeting on Thursday with the Conservative MP in Vancouver south… wanna come along? email me: emmis@shaw.ca

Along with the Old Age Security issue, we might as well ask her why Diane Findlay is dismantling EI, I’m giving the representative a taste of the cake we’re delivering to the rest of the Conservatives in Ottawa!

Syd Ryan, president of Federation of Labours Ontario, is organizing this event with local activists across the nation. I have been asked to take part. I will be there with friends.

Date and Time: Thursday, Feb. 9th at 10 am
Location: Wai Young, Conservative MP for Vancouver South, Constituency Office: 6406 Victoria Drive, Vancouver, BC V5P 3X7

Please spread the word to your friends and neighbours and come out to this event to fight against Harper Conservatives plan to raise the OAS from age 65 to 67. Bring your voice and make signs.

Many people will have to work 2 more years in order to be able to retire. I think the Conservatives should cancel the 39 Billion fighter jets and more billions on mega prisons to balance the budget.

The Real Estate Foundation of BC announced the winners of the 2011 Land Awards at a gala celebration in Vancouver on November 3 2011

ParkLane Homes accepts Private Sector Land Award - photo: Linda Mackie PhotographyThe Land Awards celebrate initiatives that showcase leadership, innovation, and collaboration related to the sustainable use and conservation of land in British Columbia.  The awards are broken into four sectors: private, public, non-profit, as well as individual.  Below is a list of this year’s winners:

“We are pleased to recognize these exceptional organizations and individuals,” said Jack Wong, Real Estate Foundation CEO. “They stand out as models for how we can develop more responsibly—and, even more fundamentally, how we can plan our communities in ways that meet the needs of people and the environment we all share.”

In introducing the finalists and the awards, event chair, Kelly Lerigny, noted, “The projects we recognize are truly outstanding. They represent the accomplishments of people in the private, public, and non-profit sectors. As leaders in our province, they have put their dreams and ideas into action to solve environmental problems; to address social issues; to revitalize local economies; and to plan livable, healthy communities. We all benefit from their example.”

Over 280 people joined the celebration at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver on Thursday evening, and a fair number continued to share conversation–and dance–at the afterparty. James Intveld and his band played to an appreciative crowd at the Rooftop Lounge.

CACV Eco- Arts Dragon in Chinese New Year Parade 2012 as part of the DTES Artist in the Street program in Vancouver

CACV Eco- Arts Dragon in Chinese New Year Parade 2012 as part of the DTES Artist in the Street program produced by Vancouver Moving Theatre and DTES Heart of the City Festival with the Community Arts Council of Vancouver (CACV)

Mary Bennett of CACV writes

ECO-ARTS DRAGON IN CHINATOWN PARADE

A parade celebrating the year of the water dragon at the end of January. What would you expect for weather? RAIN. So the idea occurred to us to make a dragon out of black (the colour related to water in Chinese system) umbrellas and each person would carry one part. Our intern from Spain, Elena, and friend of Mary (and CACV) alternated being the head of the dragon. Anna, Tashannah and Catherine all carried dragon parts that they had made. As well Karenza T. Wall did a session with kids at Oppenheimer park to make two umbrellas with help from Elena and Francis and the Oppenheimer staff.

Thank you to the Umbrella Shop who donated two very large umbrellas that became our “banner” for the parade. And will be at many more events!

Artists in the Streets, a CACV program coordinated by Terry Hunter of Vancouver Moving Theatre, booked Brad Muirhead and the Carnegie Street Band and once again Lily and her Mom arrived in costume and on stilts.

Jessica and Donna – and hundreds of others – took photos.

Bruce Voyce, our Eco-Arts Salon presenter for February showed up with some friends in dragon costumes made from water bottles, too.

For more information on the process of dragon creation, go to http://communityarts.ning.com and search “dragon”.

Thank you to all who participated, cheered, waved  or are just now enjoying these fabulous photos from Richard.

See you all next year for Snake creations.
