Suhell Nafar, Tamer Nafar, Mahmoud Jreri
DAM is the first and leading Palestinian Rap Group. It is composed of Tamer Nafar, 27, his younger brother Suhell, 23, and Mahmoud Jreri, 24. The group has been performing together since the late 90s. Tamer, who had been performing Rap since 1998 with his brother, was first contacted by Mahmoud Jreri. Mahmoud was writing his own lyrics so they quickly decided to join forces and the group was born in 1999. All three members of the group were born and grew up in the slums of Lod, a mixed town of Arabs and Jews, 20 km from Jerusalem.
DAM’s music is a unique fusion of East and West, combining Arabic percussion rhythms, Middle Eastern melodies and urban Hip Hop.
The lyrics of DAM are influenced by the continuing Israeli – Palestinian conflict as well as by the Palestinian struggle for freedom and equality. DAM also draw their influence from such controversial issues as terrorism, drugs and women’s rights.
Musically they take their inspiration from both Hip Hop artists (Nas, 2Pac, Mos Def, IAM, NTM, Saian Supa Crew, MBS etc.) and Arabic music (Marcel Khalifa,Kazem Saher,George Wassouf, Majda al Romi etc.)
The songs, lyrics and music, are written and arranged by all members of the group and musically produced by them and other known producers.
DAM are now gaining increased international popularity around the world through their unique message and ground-breaking live shows.
DAM’s debut album “Stop Selling Drugs” was released locally in 1998, followed by the second album called “Min Irhabi” (“who’s the terrorist?”) which was released in 2001. The controversial title track of this album was released on the net and more than 1 million people downloaded it within one month from the website ArabRap.Net. The song was also distributed free with Rolling Stone magazine in France and became a “street” anthem. It was also featured in a compilation in France with Manu Chao, Zebda, Noir Desir and many other top artists.
Furthermore, the lyrics of the song were taught in some Universities around the world because of their deep meaning, and were also used in pro-Palestinian demonstrations around the world.

This is a restaurant that is open 24 hours except on Sundays when they close early.
Well worth the drive out to this East Van location, AHA MEDIA walked in hungry for a quick breakfast and were immediately greeted by friendly staff who sat us down to our table.
We didn’t even have time to look at the two enormous aquariums stocked with giant sized fish which is a nice calming and welcoming focal point upon Knight and Day’s entrance way. It was peaceful atmosphere with other couples enjoying their meals, judging by the smiles on their faces

Our waitress was a very sweet, lovely and vivacious young woman named “Shane” (her nickname ) who was of Iranian and Kurdish descent. She was prompt and was very nurturing in her service, always there at the right time to refill our drinks and make light conversation with us. 🙂
Since we were on a time budget, she responded by quickly bringing out our dishes and cooked to perfection!

My dining companion ordered Steak and Eggs which were smothered in Grilled Mushrooms.
He was surprised at the amount of food! “Wow!”
While eating his steak, he exclaimed that it was so tender, he could cut it with a fork! 🙂 ” How’s that for a breakfast steak? , he announced as he happily ate his breakfast with great gusto!
I ordered a Cheese Omelette :
I was really amazed at the amount of cheese in the omelette! I was very happy! 🙂
We were lucky to sit by the two gigantic aquariums which provided us some visual entertainment while we had a nice conversation. It was a very relaxing time to eat at Knight and Day Restaurant despite our tightly packed schedule. 🙂
Our bill with drinks came to only $25.50. For the quality of food and service, we expected to see a higher amount, so we tipped our waitress some more 🙂
Our experience at Knight and Day was exceptional! 🙂 Lovely and attentive waitress, Very Good Food, and Great value! We were very happy with our East Vancouver food choice compared to a more recent Downtown Vancouver restaurant review of ours which was more expensive coupled with bouts of inattentive service to our table.
As we were leaving, our wonderful waitress called out ” Please come back soon !” – When was the last time, a waitress wanted you to come back and truely meant what she said? 🙂
Just that one final comment alone from her was a nice finishing touch to our breakfast and a great start to our busy day!

Vancouver, April 23, 2009 – The Vancouver Police Department is instructing Dunbar residents to call 911 whenever they see “beggars” on Dunbar Street. “The Vancouver Police Department has instructed Dunbar Community Patrollers to call 911 when they see beggars on Dunbar Street and I would urge you to do so too,” wrote Linda MacAdam, Chair of the Dunbar Community Patrol, in an email to residents. MacAdam noted that these instructions were confirmed by Sergeant Randy Regush of the Vancouver Police Department. Vancouver ranked last among 13 North American cities surveyed in terms of police response times, according to a 2007 report to Vancouver city council. The report called for increased funding for police officers to address the slow response times, which for a 911 break and enter call stretch to 34 minutes on average. The current yearly VPD budget is over $195 million, almost one-quarter of the City’s total budget. “In 2008 Vancouver police spent thousands of hours ticketing Downtown Eastside residents for minor bylaw infractions, and in the West Side they treat legal panhandling as a 911 emergency,” says Laura Track, Pivot’s housing campaign lawyer. “Every year the VPD asks for more funding, but people need to ask if harassing poor people is how they should be spending that money.” “This is just another example of a broader pattern of criminalizing poverty and restricting poor people’s lawful access to public space.” “I was shocked to see this message advocating that we call 911 when we see a beggar” syas Randy Puder, a West Side resident. “What a waste of tax money. The homeless need compassion and assistance, not police making their lives even more difficult.” |
