Open Lab Discussion
LEARNING, FREEDOM & THE WEB
Wednesday November 3, 11am-2pm
W2 Woodward’s Open Lab,
250–111 W. Hastings

Learn about the open web, how it affects how we learn and explore local solutions such as creating a free community wifi for the DTES. The web surrounds us with a massive and remixable tapestry of perspectives, facts and data. It gives us the freedom to learn whatever we want at our own speed and in our own way. It lets us become our own teachers. Fundamentally: the free and open nature of the internet is revolutionizing learning. Come for a discussion that is also digitally connected to a live dialogue from Mozilla Foundation’s Drumbeat Conference in Barcelona. Free (optional lunch $5)

AHA MEDIA is very proud to help provide social media coverage of the 7th Annual Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival in Vancouver from Pre festival events starting Wed Oct 20, 2010 through to the Main Festival during Wed Oct 27 – Sun Nov 7, 2010

AHA MEDIA and Fearless City Mobile films people’s thoughts of Story Box projects at W2 Storyeum in Vancouver Downtown Eastside

At the heart of the City’s Great Beginnings Initiative is the desire to go back to its roots and give each of the founding neighborhoods something to talk about. In one such community, the DTES Story Box Project highlights its rich and storied cultural diversity through oral and written tradition. Unique object/artifact boxes illustrate stories from various voices which are intermingled to create a new and visceral experience.

The Storybox Project at the Surge Festival is the sensational finish to a process that involved over eighty members of DTES community based writing groups who developed their individual stories utilizing personal artifacts as inspiration and illustration. The manifold stories held common threads bound to universal themes. StoryBox at Storyeum presents five such themes as representative of the powerfully spoken words by the most demo-diverse voices working in concert with some of Vancouver’s brightest lights in media arts.

AHA MEDIA mentioned in The Vancouver Courier Newspaper’s article “Hyper Local Bloggers document life” on June 23, 2010

Recently AHA MEDIA was mentioned in The Vancouver Courier Newspaper’s article “Hyper Local Bloggers document life” on June 23, 2010 by Megan Stewart, Staff Writer

Irwin Oostindie, the executive director of W2 Community Media Arts Society, said media diversity is good for audiences and democracy. Online publishing atomizes the media landscape by splintering a few news sources into many, and this diversity, he says, helps residents makes sense of their city and gives voice to those who otherwise remain unheard.

Oostindie points to AHA Media, which began with three self-described citizen journalists covering the East Side and now offers media consulting to residents and organizations across Vancouver.

“They’re a great example of how social media breaks the divide, providing a voice to people who would not normally have a voice.

“Bloggers have the opportunity to use their neighbourhood as a platform to engage in a meaningful way,” he said.
