AHA MEDIA attended the Neighbourhood-Based Solutions to Homelessness Forum at Plaza 500 in Vancouver

Neighbourhood-Based Solutions to Homelessness Forum. Please join us Wednesday July 8th from 1:00pm to 4:00pm at the Plaza 500 (500 W. 12th Avenue) for a “how to” forum to discuss neighbourhood-based solutions to homelessness.

The goal of this “how to” forum is to provide a sample of the types of neighbourhood initiatives that are currently under way, in order to generate ideas and interest for other neighbourhoods to organize similar projects and events to raise awareness about and find ways to address homelessness during Homeless Action Week, October 11-17, 2009 (www.stophomelessness.ca).

Following presentations, participants will be asked to break out into smaller groups to network with others from their neighbourhood and discuss the kinds of action oriented projects and events they might want to organize for Homeless Action Week 2009 or more generally in their communities.

During the upcoming ROYAL visit from Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan to our area, the Vancouver Downtown Eastside, we at AHA MEDIA will be hoping to be lucky and honored enough to be able to film and take photographs as we welcome the Royal couple to our neighborhood! 🙂

It’s been a long time – if ever – since a prominent royal visited the city’s notorious Downtown Eastside, even in its former, more benign status as Skid Road.
But that’s where the 75-year-old Emperor of Japan and his 74-year-old wife will come calling during their three-day stop in Vancouver.
The rare royal foray into the area by a frail couple, from whom aides warn reporters to expect very, very slow movement, did not land on their agenda easily. It took weeks of intense, behind-the-scenes lobbying to overcome initial resistance to the idea of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko venturing through neighbourhoods few tourists see.
In the end, history won out. The streets of the Downtown Eastside were not always rife with the boarded-up businesses and daily horrors we see today. Once, this was the heart of Japantown, a thriving ethnic community every bit as significant as nearby Chinatown, before internment scattered the residents and delivered their businesses and possessions into the hands of others.

Description
It’s sunny, it’s warm, and it’s time for Pivot’s Summer Potluck in Wonderland! Come out and join Pivot staff, board, interns, and volunteers for a relaxed potluck at Trout Lake Park on Sunday July 12th. Mingle with other Pivot supporters, talk social change, play a game of croquet, or just lounge in shade and enjoy the scenery.
We will be sharing the south-eastern side of park with the 15th annual Alice in Wonderland Festival and Mad Tea Party and the organizers are excited about Pivot supporters being part of the festivities.
So bring your rabbit ears and/or top hats and get ready for quite a show – the festival runs from 1 – 5 and the finale includes a performance by the legendary Carnival Band.
To see the festival in action – check out this video from last year: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWXy65GNX5s
Plus! See the new top 40 Hope in Shadows photos and vote for your favourite three!
What: Pivot Summer Potluck in Wonderland
When: Sunday, July 12th 3 – 8
Where: Trout Lake off 19th Avenue (south-east end of the park)

What you should bring:
Food: bring your favorite dish to share with everyone – and just so that we don’t end up with 200 different potato salads, send Naila a quick email at getinvolved [at] pivotlegal [dot] com and let us know what you are bringing. We are attempting to make the potluck a paper-plate free event, so please bring something to eat on (ceramic plate, tupperware, etc.) and utensils.
Musical instruments: if you have a musical instrument and feel like playing on a Sunday in the park, please bring it along.
Games: we have the basics – soccer, frisbee, croquet – covered but if you have a game that you really want to share, bring it out.
Costumes: If you want to engage with the festival the possibilities are endless (see the video). Some easy items include: rabbit ears, top hats, face-paint, Alice dresses.
Looking forward to seeing you in the park!
