November 7, 2015 Leave a comment

Art Walk
WALK AROUND THE BLOCK with Brian McBay
Saturday November 7, 11am (approx. 90 minutes)
Meet at 221A, 221 E. Georgia
$10; pay what you can for local residents

Art plays a role in social transformation. The city block bound by E. Georgia, Main, Union and Gore is experiencing this right now as independent art galleries and arts organizations have recently made their home around the block, new businesses have opened, and longtime business mainstays have shut down. Join artist, designer and 221A curator Brian McBay for a walk around the block that is a microcosm of the larger neighbourhood. Brian will talk about the role that arts can play in our community as we go through intensive change. The walk will stop at Vancouver Especially (A Vancouver Special scaled to its property value in 1973, then increased by 8 fold) by Canadian artist Ken Lum at 271 Union, 221A’s new outdoor site

REGULAR EXPRESSIONS for 12th Annual Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival 2015 in Vancouver on Nov 6 2015

November 6, 2015 Leave a comment

Reception & Exhibit
REGULAR EXPRESSIONS
Opening: Friday November 6, 7pm
221A, 221 E. Georgia
Exhibition November 7, 2015 to February 6, 2016
Free

A blinking vertical line—an empty cursor inside a search field is the elemental form of this exhibition. A “regular expression” in computer science defines a set of symbols, which describe a specific search pattern. Here, the term also captures the irony of outcomes when artists work with digital systems governed by the grammars of the searchable and the scrapeable. Artists: Aleksandra Domanović, David Horvitz, Jeremy Hutchison, The Lincoln Collection and Oliver Laric, Lindsay Lawson, Xiaoshi Vivian Vivian Qin, Solid Gold Bomb, Jesse Russell and Ronald Cohn (VDM Publishing). Curated by A.E. Benenson and Kristen Chappa

November 6, 2015 Leave a comment

Launch & Reception
SALMON STREAM MOSAIC PROJECT
Friday November 6, 1pm – 3pm
Oppenheimer Park, 488 Powell
Free

Join Mosaic artist Bruce Walther as he unveils the Salmon Stream Mosaic, a community masterpiece created to connect the two recently installed poles by Chief Henry Robertson and Wes Nahanee in the NE corner of Oppenheimer Park. Bruce led workshops every Friday for the last six months where community participants learned the story behind the carvings and the ancestry of the carvers to link the poles together; the Salmon Stream Mosaic meets in the middle. Inspired by the Oppenheimer Commemoration group, a grant from the Vancouver Parks Board Neighbourhood Matching Fund made the project possible. Join honoured guests to celebrate this beautiful community project; everyone welcome!
