THROUGH THE EYE OF THE RAVEN
Friday October 29, 2pm-4pm
Urban Aboriginal Gallery, 456 E. Hastings

Meet the team of artists who created, designed and painted the extraordinary Through the Eye of the Raven, Western Canada’s largest mural recently completed on the west wall of the newly-renovated Orwell Hotel. Hear their ‘mural stories’ in the informal setting of the new Urban Aboriginal Gallery, followed by a 3pm slideshow presentation featuring the community and artistic process of this landmark project. Mural co-artistic directors were Richard Tetrault and Jerry Whitehead, and participating artists included: Richard Shorty, Northern Tutchone; Sharifah Marsden, Anishnabe; Haisla Collins, Tsimshian; Eric Parnell, Haida; and the poet Nicola Campbell, Interior Salish of Nle7kepmx (Thomson) and Nsilz (Okanagan). All artists are residents of Vancouver’s Eastside. The mural is a Vancouver Native Housing Society project created with support from the City of Vancouver, BC Housing, Britiannia Community Centre, Strathcona BIA, General Paint, the Royal Bank, VanMar Constructors and others. The best views of the mural are either from across the street in the Patricia Hotel parking lot, or looking east from Gore up the alley between Hastings and Pender. The Rev. Chan Family Legacy: Five Generations of Vancouver Chinese History 1888 to 2007 at the 7th Annual Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival in Vancouver on Thursday Oct 28, 2010

October 29, 2010 1 comment

THE REV. CHAN FAMILY LEGACY: Five Generations of Vancouver
Chinese History 1888 to 2007
Thursday October 28, 7:30pm
Chinese Cultural Centre Museum & Archives, 555 Columbia

The Chan family first came to Canada to help start the Chinese Methodist Church and every generation since has made contributions to Canadian society. In 2007, filmmaker Halya Kuchmij interviewed members of one of the oldest families on the West Coast and made a documentary about the stories and achievements of Reverend & Mrs. Chan, their sons Luke Chan (Hollywood actor) and Jack Chan (golfer); grandchildren Helen Lee and Victor Wong (WW2 veteran); great-grandchildren Gary Lee (entertainer) and Janice Wong (artist); and great-great grandchildren Todd Wong (community and cultural activist) and Tracey Hinder (high school student). The many turns of the Chan family reflect the challenges of exclusion, the fight for rights, the strength of family and citizenship, and the right to vote. The festival is pleased to show The Chan Legacy, directed by Halya Kuchmij, from the CBC Learning Generations Series (2007, 43:37) and we are fortunate to have Todd Wong moderate the conversation afterwards. Todd is a descendent of Reverend Chan and the creator of Gung Haggis Fat Choy, the annual celebration of Chinese New Year and Robbie Burns Day (www.gunghaggisfatchoy.com) – an event that marries two cultures that once lived completely separate in the early days of British Columbia. Everyone welcome.

Book Launch
THE RETURNING JOURNERY
Dalannah Gail Bowen
Thursday October 28, 8pm
Centre A, 2 W. Hastings

Join one of Vancouver’s premier vocalists Dalannah Gail Bowen and friends to celebrate the publication of a poetry collection based on the music and songs of her original show The Returning Journey. In 2007, Dalannah and Michael Creber presented a heart-breaking and soul-stirring performance of poetry and song to share her journey through abuse, addiction, homelessness, illness and return. She has now collected that material in book form and invites you to share in the continuing journey. Dalannah, a proud Downtown Eastside resident, revived her singing career in 2003 when she participated in the landmark In The Heart Of A City: The Downtown Eastside Community Play (Vancouver Moving Theatre/Carnegie). Her first CD Mamma’s Got the Blues, of which the title track was a finalist in the 2008 International Songwriting Awards, continues to receive international airplay. Along with readings of some of the poems, this is a great opportunity to hear great music with a great singer accompanied by great musicians, including Michael Creber on piano. (www.dalannahgailbowen.com) Settle in on a cold evening and listen to some fine words and music.

An Evening with the Git Hayetsk Dancers at the 7th Annual Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival in Vancouver on Wednesday Oct 27, 2010

AN EVENING WITH THE GIT HAYETSK DANCERS

Wednesday October 27, 7:30pm
Carnegie Community Centre Theatre, 401 Main

Git Hayetsk in Sm’algyax (Tsimshian language) means “people of the copper shield.” The copper shield is the most prestigious ceremonial object in Northwest Coast Native culture and can symbolize wealth, power, prestige, strength and peace. The Git Hayetsk Dancers take pride in the fact that only traditional hand-made regalia, masks, skin and box drums are used to perform their ancient and contemporary songs and dances. They continue to practice the artistry embodied by the copper shield as they live their lives in the area of Coast Salish territory.

Led by Mike Dangeli and Mique’l Askren, the people of the copper shield sing the songs of their ancestors and create new songs, dances, drums, rattles, masks and regalia to reflect experiences of First Nations people today, http://www.vafcs.org.
