Based in Vancouver B.C., Building Opportunities with Business (BOB) is a non-profit organization that is championing an inclusive revitalization process for the inner-city that values existing businesses and residents. BOB is a connector, a resource and a facilitator working to: strengthen the inner-city’s community capacity; identify and build on untapped business opportunities; improve employment opportunities and retention; and increase investment in Vancouver’s inner-city.

On the main floor of 163 East Pender in Vancouver’s historic Chinatown, we have a large room which is available for rent for meetings and events, it is also available as coworking space Monday to Friday from 9 until late. In addition to desks, chairs, tables, couches, we installed several lockable lighted display cabinets. This floor is retail grade, on Pender right across the street from Vancity. As a service to local residents and businesses, we are displaying wares, art, product, crafts, business cards, and marketing material free in these display cases. As you can see their are several empty shelves. Each shelf is over one cubic foot and can hold about 5kg of stuff.

We need your stuff to display. You can display whatever you want, for as long as you want, any sales or leads you may generate you are free to pursue to the fullness of your ability. BOB charges zero dollars for this and manyother services. Space is available first come, first served, write coworking@bobics.org or contact a staff member.

Foo’s Ho Ho is the oldest Chinese restaurant in Hum Siu Fow (Saltwater City – Vancouver) historic Chinatown. It’s unique because it serves an old country-style of Cantonese cuisine that cannot be found anywhere else in Metro Vancouver.
———————————————————————————————————————————————————-
Many of these dishes have names that are similar to dishes in other local Chinese restaurants, but few follow the old traditional cooking style that originated from the small villages surrounding the ‘Four Counties’ near the Pearl River delta. This peasant-style of cooking was brought over by the Lo Wah Kiu adventurers who arrived on the shores of Gum San (Gold Mountain – North America) in the wake of the 1849 California gold rush to seek fame and fortune.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

As Chinatowns prospered, many of the finest Chinese chefs followed this style of down-home cooking and soon it was elevated to a high cuisine. As the Chinese population dispersed towards the prairies and farther east, the Chinese café became a staple in almost every small rural community. Soon many dishes such as Egg Fu-Yung, Chow Mein, Chop Suey, Sweet and Sour Pork and Deep Fried Prawns were added to the menu. Thus the food served by Foo’s Ho Ho is part of a culinary legacy that spans over 150 years of continued Chinese Canadian presence in Canada.

movement to keep Foo's Ho Ho's heart beating"

Coworking and hotdesking are growing trends with companies and individuals who are abandoning high-priced real estate in favour of more practical – and less pricey –  workspace solutions.

With inner city Vancouver home to many independent tech and creative entrepreneurs, it’s a natural for the newly opened coworking@BOB space, a shared work space created by Building Opportunities with Business, a non-profit aimed at supporting business development and job opportunities in the neighborhood.

High-ceiling, spacious and located on the main floor of a building at 163 East Pender St., the shared open space gives tenants desk space, along with chairs, tables, couches and other furnishings that distinguish it from a less inviting cubicle haven. Art on the walls from Vancouver’s Grace Gallery will be rotated regularly.

“We hope that this open shared work space can contribute to the revitalization of the inner-city by providing a space for creative professionals to flourish, for ideas to percolate, to cross pollinate, for businesses to grow, a place where stuff gets done,” reads BOB’s announcement of the new space.

Wi-Fi, a fridge, microwave, filtered water cooler and secure bike storage round out the offerings that come at a flat rate of $200 a month with keyless access to the building.
