The Show
The Cheaper Show returns once again.
In June of 2010, the ninth installment of The Cheaper Show will take place in Vancouver, BC
The concept of The Cheaper Show is very simple: 200 multi-disciplined international artists presenting 400 pieces of art, each priced at $200 for one night only. Far from being an ‘art sale,’ each exhibiting artist consciously makes a sacrifice by selling their work for less than its potential value. This creates united support for the event, the arts community, and an opportunity for this show to take place in an environment that is accessible to everyone. In turn, many walk away with sales, exposure, commissions and gallery representation, as well as having an opportunity to connect with peers on an even playing field.
Visitors are drawn to the show, discovering a rare display of exceptionally diverse talent where someone from almost any financial background may own a piece of art. These people include the curious, the first time buyer, and the well-seasoned collector.
The Cheaper Show is a salon style exhibition that focuses on quality and diversity rather than category. Works of art, regardless of medium, are displayed so as to activate one another; oil paintings and illustrations hang next to contemporary photographs with content that ranges from the urban to the academic.
The Cheaper Show has never been a profit-based event. Admission is free and the artists receive 75% of the sale with the remainder going to offset the production costs. The focus of the show is to create a greater observance of talent with both established and underexposed artists.

Founded in 2003, DTES Community Arts Network brings together artists, residents, community agencies, and arts organizations to cultivate a vibrant and viable arts scene in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver.
Few neighbourhoods make as much noise as Vancouvers Downtown Eastside (DTES). Although much of the attention it attracts focuses on drug addiction, mental health, and poverty, it is also one of the most creatively-inclined areas of the city, as seen in its street art, numerous art galleries, scores of artists, demonstrations, and even the unruly culture animating its streets and alleyways. While other neighbourhoods struggle to define themselves in a rapidly changing city, the DTES boasts a community that knows who it is and isnt afraid to express it. DTES Community Arts Network strives to channel this creative power to make positive change in the neighbourhood by cultivating a viable and vibrant community arts sector.
DTES Community Arts Network emerged out of the 2003 celebrations commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Carnegie Centre and the historic role of the DTES as the Heart of the City. It is a network of individuals and community and professional arts organizations working through the arts to contribute to the economic, social, and cultural renewal of the DTES. As intense redevelopment transforms the area, DTES CAN aims to strengthen the DTES as a healthy, artistically vibrant, and culturally rich community where people with predominantly low incomes and from diverse lifestyles, abilities, and financial means feel at home.
DTES CAN is committed to providing opportunities for Downtown Eastside residents to experience the arts as aspiring and practicing artists, audience members, as a means of personal and collective expression, and to advocate on issues affecting the community. Using a cluster organizational model to bring artists and residents together, DTES CAN encourages participation, builds capacity, and supports, renews, and builds arts and related projects in the community to foster cultural redevelopment.

To Honour Our Mother: Do Our Stories Lie with Farley Mowat
Matriarch and elder Ilse Schweder Bruderer Clements joins with her daughters and grandchildren to tell their stories and explore the consequences of story and historical manipulation and exploitation, with particular focus on the stories of Farley Mowat as they pertain to them. This is about setting the record straight in art and history.

Opening Night: Bruderer Fashion Show Musical Performances
Indigenous inspired fashions by Sandra and Pat Bruderer, as well as up and coming designer, 19 year old Heather Williams. Musical performances by Tara Willard and Camillia.
January 21
Birch Bark Biting: One of the Rarest and most threatened Indigenous art forms.
Pat Bruderer is one of the last remaining practitioners of this art form, bringing it to a level of articulation never before witnessed in history. Single layers of bark are painstakingly harvested, then folded and bitten with the teeth to produce elaborate stories and patterns. Discussions about history, traditional uses, as well as participatory demonstrations.

Come listen and participate in conversation with traditional peoples and spiritual leaders about the issues facing us all.

She Keeps The Door Sandra Bruderer & Splitting The Sky with John Boncore

This dynamic couple will be presenting their views and current work, including Splitting the Skys upcoming historic court case pertaining to the war crimes of George W. Bush, as well as readings from their book.

Make it Real: Authenticating and protecting indigenous art forms
Conversations with people involved in the indigenous arts movement discussing the recognition, authenticating, and support of First Nations arts and crafts. Panelists include Pat Bruderer, who as worked on this issue for years, and guest keynote presenters working on behalf of Norval Morrisseau, including: Gabe Vadas (Weekan) who was Norvals agent for 20 years; Bryant Ross of Coghlan Art who continues to represent Norval for over 20 years; and Mark Anthony Jacobson.

What does our future look like? Conversations surrounding our collective future, with particular focus on the necessities of life and the plight of todays youth, finding our way back to a meaningful existence.
