NAOMI HEROIN ASSISTED TREATMENT RESARCH SURVIVORS: EXPERIENCES AND RECOMMENDATIONS
In January 2011, Dave Murray organized a group of participants from the NAOMI heroin assisted treatment research study in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver.
The NAOMI Patients Association (NPA) meets every Saturday at Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users (VANDU). Shortly after NPA began to meet, they decided to work towards conducting their own research about their experiences as NAOMI research subjects. They were particularly interested in recording their experiences during and following NAOMI and making recommendations for future heroin and drug substitution research experiments and programs.
Being the only contemporary “research participants” in North America to receive heroin maintenance, they believe that they have unique knowledge about the NAOMI projectand its impact on the lives of those addicted.
The recommendations for future projects and programs are drawn from lived experiences.
The following presentation draws from these focus groups and NPA meetings.

10. History and Social Walks: An always popular component of the festival, we are pleased to present a record number of walks this year to celebrate Vancouver’s 125th Anniversary:
• Powell Street Walking Tour: On this historical tour, Raymond Nakamura takes you back in time to the vibrant pre-war community of Japanese Canadians and Japanese immigrants who lived and worked in the area until their forced removal in 1942.

11. Ukrainian Hall’s Community Concert, Supper & Community Dance: The festival ends on a high note with three special events on one day at the Ukrainian Hall. Start your afternoon with the Association of United Ukrainian Canadians Community Concert, featuring the Barvinok Choir, the Vancouver Folk Orchestra and the Dovbush Dancers. Lively music, invigorating dance and colourful costumes beckon us. Special guests include Todd Wong who brings a cultural fusion to his accordion playing, and a musical tribute to The Milestones – “the finest folk music ensemble in BC in the sixties” – Gary Cristall. ASSOCIATION OF UNITED UKRAINIAN CANADIANS COMMUNITY CONCERT & SUPPER
Sunday November 6, 3pm
Ukrainian Hall, 805 E. Pender
The festival ends on a high note with the annual AUUC concert and supper at the Ukrainian Hall. The AUUC is pleased to present their season opening concert for the closing afternoon of the Festival. The concert offers a welcoming atmosphere of Ukrainian traditions, lively music, invigorating dance and colourful costumes. Featuring all of the Hall’s performing arts groups: the Barvinok Choir led by choral director Beverly Dobrinsky; the Vancouver Folk Orchestra – one of the oldest and largest folk orchestras in Vancouver; and the award-winning Dovbush Dancers.
Special guests include: William Nahanee (Kwel-a-s-nexw), Ingrid Gurvan, and Ingrid’s daughters Shaquinni and Sabrina who offer a traditional Squamish Greeting of the day in song and dance; Doug Masuhara and the Seymour Youth Taiko Drummers present the powerful beats of taiko; and fifth-generation Chinese Canadian Todd Wong brings a cultural fusion to his accordion playing, and is joined by Andy Fielding, an accomplished accordion player with the folk orchestra. The crowning jewel of today’s concert is a musical tribute to The Milestones, a group Gary Cristall has called “the finest folk music ensemble in BC in the sixties.” Harry Hoshowsky, a musician with the Vancouver Folk Orchestra was also a member of this music group. We look forward to presenting a music tribute to Harry and The Milestones! After this cultural feast, we gather downstairs for a delicious traditional Ukrainian Supper! Concert and supper $20.
