The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey movie at Cineplex Scotiabank Theatre Vancouver

Peter of AHA MEDIA says

Oh what a memorable weekend to see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in Vancouver!

Friday night December 14, 2012 we went to see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. A movie I have been waiting for ever since the first Lord of the Rings movie came out. We arrived 3 hrs early (we aren’t stupid, we knew what the lineups would be like) and settled 2nd in line with popcorn, nachos, and drinks inside special edition cups (mine had a mini Gandalf on top).

We were delighted to make new friends Martin and Michael.

2.5 hrs later after turning aside line budgers and whiny people, we get into the movie theater and see a totally blank screen, no commercials, no trailers. Hmm, that never happens. After 1/2 hr of waiting, the manager comes in and tells us that there were technical difficulties and that the movie would be cancelled for the night; we would be able to get refunds and  at the front desk. Cue riots, yelling, and the throwing of various food items at the manager.

Saturday December 15, 2012 rolls around: we come back to see the movie once more (must see it or the world will end). We get in line (first in line this time) with more popcorn and nachos and get in easily.

We met Ken, the General Manager who was very kind and considerate when listening to our thoughts about the night before with the technical difficulties.  We felt Ken  really cared what we had to say. We will always return back to Cineplex Scotiabank Theatre Vancouver to watch movies in the future.

Sharing the front of the line with us was a very nice Dr. Stan Karon and his sons who sat beside us and enjoyed the movie with us.

In walking into the theatre we were very relieved to see lights. Yay, this time there are commercials  and trailers up on screen! 20 mins later the movie starts to cheers from the crowd, everyone is happy!

WARNING!!!! SPOILERS!!!
The movie starts with Bilbo Baggins as an old man recounting his journey and writing it in a book for his nephew (really adopted son) Frodo Baggins who we see in the 3 Lord of the Rings films. Cut to 60 years previous where Bilbo is overwhelmed by an unexpected party in his small Bag End under the hill with a little green door. 13 Dwarves and a very tall Gandalf (played excellently by Ian McKellen) invade his house, tell him about a great dragon, and enlist his help as a burglar to kill the dragon Smaug. I will not tell you anything else about the movie except that there are plenty of fight scenes, lots of humor, plenty of orcs and wargs (their riding wolves), and some rather impressive elves headed by Cate Blanchett revising her role as Galadriel and Hugo Weaving as Elrond. Oh, not to forget, there is a crazy Brown wizard that rides a dog sled towed by bunnies.

3rd Annual Community Christmas Craft Fair 2012 in Vancouver Downtown Eastside

December 15, 2012 Leave a comment

The Community Christmas Craft Fair is a unique experience to support low-income women in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

Crafts are affordably priced, vendors are part of a supportive community that the public is welcomed into, and the event has no cost to vendors which means all proceeds go directly to the artists. Not only that, but submission to the fair is restricted to low-income residents in the DTES, many of whom are involved in drug and alcohol treatment and employment training programs.
