UGM to host 70th Annual Christmas Dinner for over 3,000 homeless and struggling people

What: UGM will host its 70th annual scrumptious Christmas dinner for the hungry, hurting and homeless of the Downtown Eastside, New Westminster, and Mission.

When: Saturday, December 11, from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Where: Union Gospel Mission, 616 East Cordova Street

OTHER LOCATIONS:

– New Westminster Drop-in: 658 Clarkson Street (doors open at noon)

– Mission Drop-in: 33071 Railway Ave (doors open at 11:00am)

About the Event

Planned in coordination with other service providers, Union Gospel Mission serves its Christmas meal early in the month so as to not conflict with other community meals. UGM will utilize the help of about 300 volunteers to serve over 3,000 people at several locations.

Second Christmas Meal – A Table for 2000

Thanks to the generosity of The Glowbal Restaurant Group, Union Gospel Mission will host a second Christmas meal on Thursday, December 23. Again this year, Glowbal Group chefs and staff will be on hand to serve a Christmas dinner for up to two thousand Downtown Eastside residents. More details about this meal to follow in the coming weeks

A public forum called “Human Rights and Media Matters” is being held tonight (December 9) at W2 Storyeum in Vancouver.

Georgia Straight editor Charlie Smith is moderating the discussion, which is being cohosted by the Association of Chinese Canadians for Equality and Solidarity Society, the Chinese Canadian National Council, and the W2 Community Media Arts Society.

The panel features B.C. Civil Liberties Association executive director David Eby, Downtown Eastside activist Tami Starlight, antiracist activist Harsha Walia, and UBC history professor Henry Yu.

On the eve of International Human Rights Day, a public forum on “Media Matters and Human Rights” will be co-hosted by ACCESS Association of Chinese Canadians for Equality and Solidarity Society, the Chinese Canadian National Council and W2 Community Media Arts Society.

Time:  Thursday, December 9 7:00pm – 10:00pm

Location: 151 West Cordova, Vancouver

Moderated by Charlie Smith, editor of the Georgia Straight, the members of panel are:

David Eby – lawyer and currently executive director of B. C. Civil Liberties Association

Tami Starlight – anti-oppression activist and a founder of the Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood Council
