The beloved Carnegie Learning Centre is launching its new book Invisible Heroes: Aboriginal Stories from Vancouver’s DTES. This book is a collection of stories from our ‘Invisible Heroes’, a group of community-nominated aboriginal community members who are making daily positive contributions in many areas of neighbourhood life. The ‘Invisible Heroes’ group met for six months to explore storytelling and to reflect on personal journeys: their stories document the personal and the political. The book will be made available to learning centres across the country as curriculum material that reflects the experience of inner-city aboriginal community members. Join us in celebrating the launch of the book, and the courage and resilience of our ‘Invisible Heroes.’ Meet the authors, hear their stories, join in the discussion. Stanley Paul, one of the Invisible Heroes, is featured on this year’s Festival program guide cover!

Music & Spoken Word
A CELEBRATION OF THE CARNEGIE THEATRE
Wednesday October 28, 6pm – 9:30pm

The Carnegie Theatre is one of the most heavily used community spaces in the Downtown Eastside. Recently funds were raised to make the theatre more accessible to community groups, and with the work completed, the Festival invites you to celebrate, mingle and socialize at an evening of music, jazz, spoken word, and musical improvisation. Refreshments!

6pm Something new this year! Musicians with the Carnegie Jazz Band are reconfiguring in multiple smaller Carnegie Jazz Combos, and will play a selection of jazz standards and original material, including new compositions by Brad Muirhead and a new song by Terry Hunter, Festival Artistic Producer.

7:30pm The Carnegie Jazz Band returns with their finger snappin’, toe tappin’ and head boppin’ hot music under the wonderful tutelage of multi-instrumentalist and composer Brad Muirhead.

8:30pm Special guests: Idverb with a kaleidoscopic collage of spoken word and music. Performed by Brad Muirhead, Lisa Miller (piano), Chris Kelly (electronics), with text by spoken-word artist Kedrick James. Guest community poets include Stephen Lytton, Muriel Marjorie Williams and Phoenix Winter who will join Idverb for performances completely new and original.

Join friends from the neighbourhood, dignitaries, Phoenix Winter (President, Carnegie Community Centre Association) and special guests for this the grand Opening Ceremony of our 12th annual festival! Today we celebrate the artists in our midst; the strength and resilience of the Downtown Eastside community; and the theme of this year’s Festival, Nourished by Community.

William Nahanee (Kwel-a-a-nexw) of the Squamish Nation will open with a Welcome Song; DTES favourite Dalannah Gail Bowen and Owen Owen Owen will nourish our souls with their heart-felt music; Sylvi MacCormac will share her new soundscape on the Festival accompanied by a slide show of festival photographs; poet-extraordinaire Muriel Marjorie Williams will stir things up with trombonist Brad Muirhead; John Endo Greenway, Rosemary Georgeson and Grace Eiko Thomson will present an excerpt from Against the Current, along with a hopeful surprise! And the Hastings Street Band will have us ready to boogie with their toe-tappin’ hot jazz.

Refreshments! Everyone welcome.

Welcome to the 12th Annual Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival

Wednesday October 28 to Sunday November 8, 2015

Featuring over 90 events at over 25 locations throughout the Downtown Eastside

The annual Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival is a cultural and heritage event that serves as a high impact, bridge building force that gives voice to the Downtown Eastside and its low income residents, cultural communities and neighbourhoods.

To recognize the abundance of talent, wisdom and power of our home community, the theme of this year’s Festival is ‘Nourished by Community.’ As we face the challenges and opportunities of the coming years, we are inspired by the neighbourhood’s indigenous stories and feel proud of the art forms, artists, values, heritage and exciting community-engaged art generated in Vancouver’s founding community.

The Festival takes inspiration from the words of the late much beloved Downtown Eastside poet and activist Bud Osborn: Our purpose is to live in community, and community is care, care for one another, care for those least able to care for themselves, care for all, care in action.

The 2015 Festival features a feast of twelve days of music, stories, songs, poetry, cultural celebrations, films, theatre, dance, processions, spoken word, panels, workshops, discussions, gallery exhibitions, multi media, art talks, history walking tours, and a diverse array of artists.

A special presentation this year is Against the Current, an original cross-cultural performance that explores the role of salmon in Japanese and First Nations history, culture and the shared experience of swimming against the current. Created by Chibi Taiko, Katari Taiko, Sansho Daiko, Sawagi Taiko and Vancouver Okinawa Taiko, with storyteller Rosemary Georgeson (Sahtu Dene/Coast Salish) and music ensemble Tzo’kam (Lil’wat), led by Russell Wallace.

An abundance of other events include: • A Celebration of the Carnegie Theatre with the Carnegie Jazz Band (band leader Brad Muirhead) and special guests IdVerb; the book launch of From the Heart of a City; • Beneath the Surface, an original teen suicide prevention play by Imagi’Nation; • special guest Columpa Bobb shares Stealing Light: Stories of Transformation; • spirit-lifting Barrio Flamenco: Flamenco for the People with flaming hot music and dance; • Culture Saves Lives, gallery show and auction; • book reading and live interview with writer Michael Christie in partnership with the Vancouver Public Library; • guest poets Valerie Mason-John and Bertha Clark present The Courage to Heal; • a celebration concert of blues, jazz and gospel with Dalannah Gail Bowen and Friends; and the closing afternoon concert at the Ukrainian Hall featuring, among others, Orkestar Slivovica and the exciting Ukrainian Dovbush Dancers.

The mandate of the Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival is to promote, present and facilitate the development of artists, art forms, cultural traditions, history, activism, people and great stories about Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. The festival involves a wide range of professional, community, emerging and student artists, and lovers of the arts. Over 1,000 local artists and Downtown Eastside residents participated in last year’s 2014 Festival.

Many events are free or by suggested donation.
