FIRST NATIONS ARTIST STUDIO
October 23 – 25 & October 28 – November 1, 12pm – 4pm
Raven’s Eye Studio, 458 E. Hastings
On weekday afternoons during the Festival, the artists of the Raven’s Eye Studio will open the doors to host an ongoing First Nations artist studio. A group of artists work in the studio on a regular basis and they are happy to talk with you. See the artwork, talk to the artists. Artists include studio coordinator Jerry Whitehead, painter and muralist, and sculptor Gary Oliver. Make sure you take the opportunity to talk with Jerry about the spectacular mural, Through the Eye of the Raven, on the side of the Orwell Hotel where the studio is based on the ground floor. Free

The Festival is thrilled to partner with the DTES’s AHA Media to provide social media coverage (video/photos/blog) of the Heart of the City Festival. AHA Media gives voice to our local community and provides services for individuals and organizations to share their news and special events on a broader scale through social media. Founded in 2008 by local artists April Smith, Hendrik Beune, and Al Tkatch, AHA Media previously collaborated with Fearless City Media and has an ongoing working relationship with W2Community Media Arts and various other organizations and individuals in the DTES community. The members of AHA Media describe themselves as “definitely not mainstream media”. Based in Vancouver’s DTES, their style is described as non-invasive and unassuming.

CREATING PAULINE: CITY OPERA VANCOUVER
Tuesday October 29, 8pm – 9:30pm
Chinese Cultural Centre Museum, 555 Columbia
City Opera Vancouver offers an informal presentation about the creation of the new opera Pauline (by Margaret Atwood and Tobin Stokes) scheduled to premiere May 2014. City Opera will provide an introduction to the life of Canadian poet and performer Pauline Johnson (1861-1913) and a taste of the music from the opera. The Festival is thrilled to welcome special guests including composer Tobin Stokes, director Norman Armour, singer Rose-Ellen Nichols, pianist David Boothroyd, and conductor and artistic director Charles Barber. Discussion welcome. Free

Come along to the Carnegie Community Choir’s regular session and join in the fun! Enjoy a safe place to sing original and international a capella arrangements, play with group vocal improvisation, and experience techniques to free your natural voice. The choir is led by music and theatre facilitator Metta Paterson, who creates safe spaces where groups are able to revel in creativity, spontaneous play, empathic connection and powerful communication. Everyone welcome. Arrive on time! Free
