DTES BLOCK PARTY TO BLOCK CONDOS ON THE 100 BLOCK
Sat. Sep 17 at around 4 pm
Music, food, and the last bit of summer sun!

Marc Williams wants to build condos at the old Pantages Site in the Downtown Eastside. Condos in the heart of the neighbourhood will cause higher property values, higher rents in single-room occupancies, displacement of current residents, increased policing, and low-income residents feeling unwelcome in their own neighbourhood.

We are getting the neighbourhood and all our allies together to protect the site for 100% social housing for low-income residents. The DTES is not for developers to make millions, it is for our vibrant and vital low-income community!

8TH ANNUAL CORN FESTIVAL – Latin-American community’s corn harvest celebration in Vancouver

September 10, 2011 Leave a comment

via The Grandview Woodland Food Connection

The Grandview Woodland Food Connection and Britannia Community Centre are pleased to co-host the 8th Annual Corn Festival with the Canada El Salvador Action Network. This Festival is a popular event within the Latin American community here in Vancouver, celebrating the social, cultural, and political importance of corn to the people’s of Latin America.

Increasingly, genetically modified corn, much of it imported from the US, is threatening the biodiversity of indigenous varieties and corn, the sovereignty of corn growers, and ultimately of food security in Latin America. In response, communities around Latin America are struggling to re-appropriate corn as a vital and healthy food crop and important cultural identifier.

Join us on Sat. Sept 10th, 11 -5pm at Britannia Community Centre, Gym D for a wonderful fiesta celebrating corn in all its tasty forms. Share fun, music, song and food. This is an all ages Fiesta and all are welcome!

Came and share in the the Latin-American community’s corn harvest celebration. Free family fun! Enjoy a day of Latin-American art and entertainment and try delicious ethnic dishes like pupusas, tamales, tostadas and more. Check out the kid’s zone and the yearly “Queen of Corn” contest for girls.

Celebrating International Bacon Day 2011 at Save On Meats in Vancouver Downtown Eastside (DTES)

Peter Davies of AHA MEDIA writes

Today being “International Bacon Day“, I thought it best to go to and write about a place that is known for its delicious meats and decent prices. I am of course talking about Save On Meats (Next to the Army and Navy store on Hastings). Myself and 2 friends made our way to the back of the crowded restaurant and relaxed in a clean booth as we perused the menu. We decided on Grilled Cheese and Bacon sandwiches with sides of Mashed Potatoes and Bacon of course. We topped this off with bacon and chocolate milkshakes (very delicious by the way). The sandwiches were very tasty and just enough to fill us without being too much. The milkshakes to my surprise tasted very little like bacon but had a very nice aftertaste of smoky bacon that was delicious. Surprisingly we only payed approx. $10 each for this meal. If you are looking for a good place to eat with a simple menu and delicious food, I suggest you check out Save On Meats, you will not be disappointed.

Mmm bacon!  So good to the last bite!
