To Honour Our Mother: Do Our Stories Lie with Farley Mowat
Matriarch and elder Ilse Schweder Bruderer Clements joins with her daughters and grandchildren to tell their stories and explore the consequences of story and historical manipulation and exploitation, with particular focus on the stories of Farley Mowat as they pertain to them. This is about setting the record straight in art and history.
January 20
Opening Night: Bruderer Fashion Show Musical Performances
Indigenous inspired fashions by Sandra and Pat Bruderer, as well as up and coming designer, 19 year old Heather Williams. Musical performances by Tara Willard and Camillia.
January 21
Birch Bark Biting: One of the Rarest and most threatened Indigenous art forms.
Pat Bruderer is one of the last remaining practitioners of this art form, bringing it to a level of articulation never before witnessed in history. Single layers of bark are painstakingly harvested, then folded and bitten with the teeth to produce elaborate stories and patterns. Discussions about history, traditional uses, as well as participatory demonstrations.

Come listen and participate in conversation with traditional peoples and spiritual leaders about the issues facing us all.

This dynamic couple will be presenting their views and current work, including Splitting the Skys upcoming historic court case pertaining to the war crimes of George W. Bush, as well as readings from their book.

Make it Real: Authenticating and protecting indigenous art forms
Conversations with people involved in the indigenous arts movement discussing the recognition, authenticating, and support of First Nations arts and crafts. Panelists include Pat Bruderer, who as worked on this issue for years, and guest keynote presenters working on behalf of Norval Morrisseau, including: Gabe Vadas (Weekan) who was Norvals agent for 20 years; Bryant Ross of Coghlan Art who continues to represent Norval for over 20 years; and Mark Anthony Jacobson.

What does our future look like? Conversations surrounding our collective future, with particular focus on the necessities of life and the plight of todays youth, finding our way back to a meaningful existence. Jadeon Rathgeber will discuss his experiences and perspective from his own life, and will be joined by Thom Evans with analysis of the big picture.

AHA MEDIA is pleased to help announce Under One Umbrella 2010 on Saturday Jan 16 at Maritime Labor Centre in East Vancouver
Hi everyone,
The Under One Umbrella Society (formerly known as the Grandview Woodlands Drug and Alcohol Coalition) is pleased to announce Under One Umbrella 2010, our third annual service fair for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in East Vancouver. Please find attached the poster and wallet card for the event. We have printed posters ready to go and will be asking outreach workers in the community to hand out wallet cards during the week leading up to the event.
This year’s event will be on Saturday, January 16th from 10 am to 3 pm at the Maritime Labour Centre. We have around 40 service providers booked to attend this year’s event with a focus on direct service provision on site (see the poster for a list of just some of the services that will be there this year). Something new this year is mini skill-building workshops throughout the day. Some examples will be a women’s safety training workshop by PACE, tenants rights workshop by TRAC and an employment search workshop by Pathways. Of course, our event always includes free clothing, lots of delicious and healthy food and entertainment too.

The Carnegie Centre provides a range of social, recreational and educational programs for the residents of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. It is often described as the community’s living room—a place where people can come to participate in programs or to simply relax and socialize with others.
Carnegie is open 7 days a week every day of the year from 9:00 am to 11:00 pm as a safe, drug and alcohol free environment. Among the services and resources are:
- Vancouver Public Library Reading Room
- Seniors Centre
- Weight Room
- Learning/Literacy Centre
- Kitchen: 3 nutritional meals a day plus snacks
- Art Gallery
- Auditorium and Gym
- Dark Room and Pottery Room
Carnegie is also known for its rich multicultural program and arts activities. There is an outreach program in Oppenheimer Park for residents of that neighbourhood, and the “Street Program” for substance users at the corner of Main and Hastings and in Pigeon Park. Both are meant to serve people at the very margins of the community and to help them obtain real options for moving out of often destructive life styles.
Over 400 volunteers working in virtually every facet of the Centre contribute their time, talents and enthusiasm, The Carnegie Community Centre Association is the community’s voice in Carnegie, and represents Carnegie to the community and governments.
The Carnegie Newsletter is published twice a month and contains a lively range of articles, news and views, prose and poetry about life in the Downtown Eastside.
The Carnegie Community Centre building was opened in 1903 as Vancouver’s first public library. Funds for the construction of the building came from American steel magnate Andrew Carnegie. In 1957 it became the City Museum and then was empty for ten years. Following a massive campaign spearheaded by the Downtown Eastside Residents’ Association City Council agreed to save the building and convert it to a community Centre. Carnegie Community Centre opened its doors to the public on January 20, 1980.
The Carnegie Centre is a testament to the strength and commitment of Downtown Eastside residents in their struggle to renew and build a healthy community for people with low incomes and many different life styles and backgrounds.
