Street Soccer Samba – National Street Soccer Canada Championship July 23 – 25, 2010 in Oppenheimer Park, Vancouver

Teams all over will participate in a National Street Soccer Canada Championship including Portland FC and Eastside Sun Eagles at the Grand Re-opening of Oppenheimer Park on July 23 -25, 2010

Oppenheimer Park Re-Opening in Vancouver Downtown Eastside (DTES) on Sat July 24, 11 AM – 2PM

The public is invited to the official opening celebration of the redesigned 0.98 hectare Oppenheimer Park. The event will include welcome speeches, BBQ, cake and entertainment.

“Oppenheimer Park has a rich history and is the hub of many community events and celebrations, as well as being the backyard for local residents. Now it’s an even more beautiful green space,” says Park Board Commissioner Sarah Blyth.

The upgrades to the park, which cost approximately $2.5-million, include a new field house and washrooms, universally accessible walkways, children’s playground, sports court with a basketball hoop, horseshoe pitch, patio spaces, picnic tables and seating areas, central lawn area, trees and flowers, sub-surface drainage and a new irrigation system.

Greenest City Neighbourhood Small Grants in Vancouver

The Vancouver Foundation has partnered with the City of Vancouver (Social Planning Division) to fund Neighbourhood Small Grant projects focused on “urban food” with various Neighbourhood Houses.

This pilot project is called the “Greenest City Neighbourhood Small Grants”.

The timeline for this pilot initiative with the City is from July to
October 31, 2010. This means that we would need to have the projects
funded to take place by end of October.

“Urban Food Projects” which City would like to support include any NSG
Projects that have a “food” focus.  This means the projects may cover
building food gardens or garden plots, educational workshops (i.e.
canning, cooking) or workbooks  cookbooks or manuals related to food.

The Carnegie Community Action Project will present a Vision that is the results of two years of work and consultation with 1200 Downtown Eastside residents about what they want for their community and how to get it.
