ARTS IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
Thursday October 28, 7pm-8:30pm
Chapel Arts, 304 Dunlevy Free
The Heart of the City Festival is pleased to show a selection of documentaries made by students of the Vancouver Film School under the guidance of instructor and documentary filmmaker Cari Green. A second program of films will be shown on Saturday November 6, 4pm in the Carnegie Theatre.
No Light at Midnight (2010)
This short documentary tells the story of the Pantages Theatre on East Hastings, the oldest remaining vaudeville theatre in Canada, and its struggle for revitalization in the DTES. Directed by Jay Macmillan, No Light at Midnight is about the death of history and historical significance and speaks strongly to a specific case of preventable displacement and decay. (8:45”)
The Laughing Drum (2010)
A short film directed by Isaac Carter about Uzume Taiko, Canada’s first professional taiko drumming group. Their name is derived from taiko, the Japanese word for “big drum” and from the goddess of laughter, Ame No Uzume No Mikoto, who according to legend first began taiko drumming. The film gives a taste of the techniques, tools and drive that makes Uzume Taiko unique in the world of taiko. (9:23”)

An Evening with the Git Hayetsk Dancers at the 7th Annual Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival in Vancouver on Wednesday Oct 27, 2010
AN EVENING WITH THE GIT HAYETSK DANCERS
Wednesday October 27, 7:30pm
Carnegie Community Centre Theatre, 401 Main
Git Hayetsk in Sm’algyax (Tsimshian language) means “people of the copper shield.” The copper shield is the most prestigious ceremonial object in Northwest Coast Native culture and can symbolize wealth, power, prestige, strength and peace. The Git Hayetsk Dancers take pride in the fact that only traditional hand-made regalia, masks, skin and box drums are used to perform their ancient and contemporary songs and dances. They continue to practice the artistry embodied by the copper shield as they live their lives in the area of Coast Salish territory.
Led by Mike Dangeli and Mique’l Askren, the people of the copper shield sing the songs of their ancestors and create new songs, dances, drums, rattles, masks and regalia to reflect experiences of First Nations people today, http://www.vafcs.org.

To many people the Downtown Eastside is an intimidating place: a dangerous, dirty, drug-infested ‘hood patrolled by pimps, pushers, prostitutes and police.
But there are also poets, painters and patrons of the arts in the mix. And spend some time chatting with residents in the area’s animated streets and you’ll discover a tenacious camaraderie unmatched in the Lower Mainland.
Celebrating that community’s culture, heritage and distinct character, the seventh annual Heart of the City Festival — running from today to Nov. 7 — features 80 events at more than 25 venues throughout the neighbourhood. Festival artistic producer Terry Hunter likens it to an open house. And if that makes him a de facto sales agent, well, he knows every nook and cranny: as a DTES [Downtown Eastside] resident and executive director of the Vancouver Moving Theatre, Hunter has lived and worked in the area since 1975.
“It’s a great community with a great spirit,” he says. “It’s a community that’s always fought for its rights … there’s a quote in the program guide where one of the poets [Na, Megwich] says, ‘I love the Downtown Eastside community because of its beauty and its strength, its refusal to shut up and its insistence upon justice.’
