Music & Spoken Word
A CELEBRATION OF THE CARNEGIE THEATRE
Wednesday October 28, 6pm – 9:30pm
Carnegie Theatre, 401 Main
Free
The Carnegie Theatre is one of the most heavily used community spaces in the Downtown Eastside. Recently funds were raised to make the theatre more accessible to community groups, and with the work completed, the Festival invites you to celebrate, mingle and socialize at an evening of music, jazz, spoken word, and musical improvisation. Refreshments!

6pm Something new this year! Musicians with the Carnegie Jazz Band are reconfiguring in multiple smaller Carnegie Jazz Combos, and will play a selection of jazz standards and original material, including new compositions by Brad Muirhead and a new song by Terry Hunter, Festival Artistic Producer.

7:30pm The Carnegie Jazz Band returns with their finger snappin’, toe tappin’ and head boppin’ hot music under the wonderful tutelage of multi-instrumentalist and composer Brad Muirhead.

8:30pm Special guests: Idverb with a kaleidoscopic collage of spoken word and music. Performed by Brad Muirhead, Lisa Miller (piano), Chris Kelly (electronics), with text by spoken-word artist Kedrick James. Guest community poets include Stephen Lytton, Muriel Marjorie Williams and Phoenix Winter who will join Idverb for performances completely new and original.

This event was on  Day 1 of  the 12 Days of the Heart of the City Festival. Please check the website for more events!

On page 29 of the Festival Program guide, there is a writeup on AHA MEDIA

AHA MEDIA for Heart of the City Festival 2014

The Festival is thrilled to partner with the DTES’s AHA Media to provide social media coverage (video/photos/blog) of the Heart of the City Festival. AHA Media gives voice to our local community and provides services for individuals and organizations to share their news and special events on a broader scale through social media. Founded in 2008 by local artists April Smith, Hendrik Beune, and Al Tkatch, AHA Media previously collaborated with Fearless City Media and has an ongoing working relationship with W2Community Media Arts and various other organizations and individuals in the DTES community. The members of AHA Media describe themselves as “definitely not mainstream media”. Based in Vancouver’s DTES, their style is described as non-invasive and unassuming.

Say Hello to AHA Media as they visit the Festival events. They will be happy to chat with you. Stay connected to the festival with AHA’s links – see photos/videos of the festival events you attended; take in a festival event you missed; or follow one festival event while you are attending another!
