Outside Metro Vancouver Rally with Jack Layton

Come out and celebrate the momentum of this historic New Democrat campaign.

We’ve never been closer to the Canada we want. One where families come first, and no one is left behind.

Together, we can do this.

I was there. As a long time supporter of the NDP, I recall thinking “It’s different this time. We’re going to make history” when standing outside cheering for Jack. The fact that there was a line around the block and an overspilling electric crowd caused me to think this. I cherish this event so much, because it turned out to be one of the last campaign stops he’d ever make in his life. The crowd was adoring and I fell into that mode as well, whispering to my parents who also made the trek to see Jack: “There he is! You can see him if you stand on your tippy toes and crane your neck to the left!” He led us to a historic victory a few days after this event. No one there would have ever guessed that our beloved leader would be gone a mere sixteen weeks later. Three months after his death, I still grieve for him. The sadness and tremendous sense of personal loss will always be there. He became the leader of the NDP the same year I became old enough to vote, so I’ve grown up with him. To lose him was devastating. But I found a measure of great comfort when I saw the tremendous outpouring of public grief when he died. This assures me that he’ll never be forgotten and his ideals will live on.
