In 1988 The Oppenheimer Park Christmas Dinner began and in 1992 the Oppenheimer Park Christmas fund was created. Over our twenty six year history we’ve served over 3,000 meals each and every year, and created a very special Christmas tradition in the Downtown Eastside, complete with a visit from Santa and small gifts including new socks, gloves and packages of toiletries. We estimate that in 2010 we crossed the 50,000 mark in total dinners served! This has been accomplished with the support of hundreds of volunteers, the film industry community and local businesses.

Over our two-decade history we’ve served an average of 3,000 meals each year, and we estimate that in 2010 we crossed the 50,000 mark in total dinners served! This has been accomplished with the support of hundreds of volunteers, the film industry community and local businesses.

This show celebrates and explores both the creativity in the Oppenheimer community and the significance of the Park’s diverse programs from arts and recreation to cultural events and festivals. Over thirty-five artists are featured in this show, and many of the works symbolize playful aspects of the Oppenheimer Park community. Included are painting, drawing, print, sculpture, carving, mixed media and video works. In addition, the exhibition will unveil Birds that Play, an art show featuring hundreds of birds painted at community art workshops at Gallery Gachet, Carnegie Community Centre, Evelyne Saller Centre and Oppenheimer Park. Curated by Carrie Campbell.
The opening night procession leaves Oppenheimer at 5pm and is led by Brad Muirhead and the hot stylings of the Hastings Street Band. They parade down the Hastings Street sidewalk to arrive at Gallery Gachet at 6pm, where the Harmony of Nations drum group will lead a traditional welcome. Free

The Festival is thrilled to partner with the DTES’s AHA Media to provide social media coverage (video/photos/blog) of the Heart of the City Festival. AHA Media gives voice to our local community and provides services for individuals and organizations to share their news and special events on a broader scale through social media. Founded in 2008 by local artists April Smith, Hendrik Beune, and Al Tkatch, AHA Media previously collaborated with Fearless City Media and has an ongoing working relationship with W2Community Media Arts and various other organizations and individuals in the DTES community. The members of AHA Media describe themselves as “definitely not mainstream media”. Based in Vancouver’s DTES, their style is described as non-invasive and unassuming.

24th Oppenheimer Park Christmas Dinner
Saturday, December 22nd, 2012 12:00 Noon
In 1988 The Oppenheimer Park Christmas Dinner began and in 1992 the Oppenheimer Park Christmas fund was created. Over our two-decade history we’ve served over 3,000 meals each and every year, and created a very special Christmas tradition in the Downtown Eastside, complete with a visit from Santa and small gifts including new socks, gloves and packages of toiletries. This has been accomplished with the support of hundreds of volunteers, as well as donations of cash and services from the film industry community and local businesses. This year we need your help again and hope you can join us!
The last few years have been particularly challenging. As the financial climate changes, especially in our industry, it has become harder for supporters to maintain their contributions at the levels of prior years. Last year, through our “digital launch” and the addition of Paypal, we were very fortunate to obtain the support of more individuals and several new suppliers and were able to run the event at the same scale as prior years – complete with all the special extras. We hope that this year will repeat that same level of sponsorship and support!
* THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND HAVE A WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS *
